Character Name: Pacifica Northwest
Series: Gravity Falls
Timeline: After Northwest Mansion Mystery, let's say somewhere around the time of 2x13
Canon Resource Link: Pacifica @ the Gravity Falls wiki
Character History: Born to Preston and Priscilla Northwest, Pacifica Elise Northwest has had a very privileged life, as the heir of Gravity Falls' most prestigious and wealthy family. We don't know all that much about her life before she appears in the show, but it's clear she's been brought up to be very spoiled, yet definitely with a lot of expectations about how to act. But we'll get to that second part later.
Pacifica is introduced early on in the show. Stan Pines, who runs the local tourist trap known as the Mystery Shack, attempts to appeal to the local youth by throwing a party. Pacifica is one of the kids who shows up to attend the party and we quickly find out what kind of person she is. The most popular girl in the whole town, the type who thinks she's always the most important person in the room and generally has a posse with her. The actual partying quickly takes a backseat to something much more important to her; competition. A special contest is held - whoever parties the hardest (aka, whoever gets the most applause at the end of the night) wins a special party crown at the end of the night.
Pacifica wastes no time and pretty much declares herself the victor right from the start, demanding the crown. When told that, y'know, contests don't work like that and she has to compete, she states there's really no competition anyway, even taking the opportunity to make two other girls at the party. Enter Mabel Pines, who says she'll gladly compete. Despite this, she introduces herself to Pacifica in a pretty friendly way. But Pacifica? Immediately dismisses and insults her. And that, people, is how you start a rivalry.
When the party comes to an end, so does the contest. While at first Mabel gets more applause than Pacifica, she quickly glares at the crowd to intimidate them into clapping for her. This brings it to a tie, but that's still not good enough. Only total victory counts. So Pacifica bribes Old Man McGucket, self proclaimed local coot, into clapping for her, securing her victory. Most people probably wouldn't go to such lengths to win an insignificant popularity contest at a party, but Pacifica isn't most people. Delighted at winning, despite her questionable methods, she invites all the partygoers to an afterparty on her parents' boat and she leaves carried on the adoring crowd's shoulders.
Not long afterwards, it's Pioneer Day in Gravity Falls, an annual festival to celebrate the day the town was founded. As the great-great granddaughter of the founder, Nathaniel Northwest, Pacifica hosts the event and gives a speech at the opening ceremony. She encourages people to come upstage if they have enough Pioneer Day spirit and participate. Except who is it that shows up? Mabel. Yeah, turns out Pacifica is absolutely not done with that rivalry yet. Mabel is enthusiastic to participate, but Pacifica quickly shuts her down, claiming Pioneer Day is for serious people. She quickly mocks Mabel for being silly, as evidenced by her puppy sweater and nacho earrings. And then immediately tells the crowd to give her a hand, embarrassing her even further and a downtrodden Mabel quickly leaves. Pacifica quickly follows this up by asking the crowd "Who wants to hear more about me?" Classy.
Oh, she runs into Stan Pines while he's locked in the stockade too, and, when he refuses to say that the Northwest family is the best family in Gravity Falls (and insults her in a pretty impressive way), she leads several townspeople to throw tomatoes at him. Yeah, she really makes friends left and right, doesn't she?
Meanwhile, Mabel and her brother Dipper have been on quite the adventure. Turns out there's a big conspiracy centering around the eighth-and-a-half President of the United States, Quentin Trembley. Who, as it turns out, is the true founder of Gravity Falls. Not Nathaniel Northwest, who was merely a part of the coverup. Though Mabel has an opportunity to reveal this to Pacifica, she decides not to take her revenge. Dipper isn't nearly as forgiving as his sister. He chases down Pacifica's family's car, tells her the truth about Nathaniel Northwest and hands her the proof. As the car drives away, all we hear is Pacifica being quite distressed and calling out to her mom.
For the rest of the season, Pacifica only really shows up in brief cameos. She's there when the Mystery Shack hosts a fair, though, and, because the twins mess around with time travel, ends up winning Mabel's beloved pig Waddles in one timeline. This is undone when Mabel becomes seriously depressed, though, so it never happens in the main timeline.
Fast forward to later in the summer! The Pines family (and Soos) decides to go out for a nice day of mini-golfing. Mabel almost manages to get a hole-in-one on every hole, but narrowly misses at the final one. And who shows up just in time to show off her own mini golf skills? Pacifica, of course, along with her parents. Oh, and her professional mini-golf trainer, because of course she has one of those. She insults all the Pines one by one. And when Dipper questions how her family is, now that it's revealed that their legacy is based on a big lie, she happily replies that they're just fine. It's amazing how many problems you can just make disappear when you have money. Pacifica is content with just showing off and leaving it at that, but Mabel challenges her to a rematch and insults her by calling her a "walking one-dimensional bleach-blonde valley girl stereotype". That definitely sets Pacifica off and she agrees to a rematch. The two decide to meet after the course has closed for the night.
That night, Pacifica is dropped off at the course. While in the car with her parents, her father tells her that winning is everything (which her mother quickly follows up with "and looks"). Pacifica tells him not to worry about it, since she's practiced "like, a million hours". She then asks her parents if they'll stay and watch, but they won't - they've got a party to go to, after all. They'll just read about her victory in the paper. When Pacifica leaves the car with her trainer, her father once again makes it clear how important it is that she wins, telling her "You're a Northwest. Don't lose." And, well, that certainly explains her competitive attitude, doesn't it?
Unbeknownst to her, Mabel has made a deal with the Lilliputtians - tiny little golf ball people that live inside the mini golf course. Gravity Falls is weird. Turns out there's this rivalry between the Lilliputtians of each hole and Mabel promises to give a sticker to whomever helps her win the best, which would finally settle the rivalry once and for all. So when Pacifica plays against Mabel, she's sabotaged, while Mabel easily gets hole-in-one after hole-in-one. But, of course, something inevitably goes wrong. One of the Lilliputtian factions decides that the best way to win favor with Mabel is to capture and kill Pacifica.
Whoops.
Thankfully, they don't get to step two of that plan, because yeah, Mabel is definitely not down with murder. And then things get worse after she angrily eats the sticker, making the Lilliputtians decide the obvious solution is to kill Mabel and get the sticker that way, which uh... wow. These little guys need to chill. Pacifica is, understandably, more than a little upset about the whole situation. Which doesn't stop her from being indignant and snarking at Mabel anyway while she's trying to free her, but she quickly changes her tune. She then teams up with Mabel, using golf clubs to kick some tiny golf people butt. The kids all manage to escape together, though it's a close one. Pacifica is pretty angry once they're out, first yelling at the Lilliputtians through the now-closed gate, then angrily demanding that the twins tell her what the heck happened - though she's surprised when Mabel apologizes to her.
And then Pacifica is stuck there all alone, as her parents haven't arrived to pick her up. So Mabel offers her a ride with her family instead, which she begrudgingly accepts. It's a pretty awkward trip, all things considered. Hell, she's confused when Mabel offers her a taco, both because her family doesn't let her eat in the car and also what the hell is this sharing thing? But when she's finally dropped off at her house, she tells Mabel, sincerely, that she had fun. Their rivalry cools down a lot after this.
Now, should we get back to how messed up the Northwest family is? Yes, I think we should.
So! Every year, the Northwests have a great party at their mansion. We're talking the super fancy, only the most elite of the elite are invited-type of party. Ah. Rich people. It's here that we find out about a... kind of questionable parenting choice. Pacifica shows off the dress she picked for the party, but is told that she has to change it. When she tries to argue, her parents ring a ball which immediately makes her go quiet and she gives up on the issue. So uh. That's... a thing.
There's a small problem with the party, though. Of the supernatural kind. Turns out there's a ghost haunting the mansion and, well, you can imagine that that might interfere with said party. Preston Northwest decides that Dipper is best qualified to get rid of the ghost and sends Pacifica to recruit him. Dipper slams the door in her face. But, with some persuasion from Mabel, he agrees - on the condition that Mabel and her friends are allowed to go to the party.
And so Mabel and her friends have fun at the party, while Pacifica and Dipper go to take care of the ghost. Well, after Pacifica makes sure he puts on some fancier clothes. Priorities. The two snark at each other some, but eventually they do discover the ghost; a very dangerous category 10 lumberjack ghost. Dipper figures out that the best way to beat the ghost is to trap it in a silver mirror and tries to get to a room that has those, but Pacifica stops him, as going in would mean tracking mud over her parents' favorite carpet pattern. While the ghost is actively chasing them. Yes, she's more scared of how her parents will react than of the murderous ghost. Thankfully, the kids end up in a secret room where Dipper finds a different mirror and thus the ghost is trapped, though it's a pretty close call. Pacifica is so grateful about Dipper saving her life that she actually hugs him - though she then immediately tries to pay him to pretend it never happened. She still tries to get him to stay at the party afterwards.
But of course, things don't end there. Dipper finds out the truth of why the ghost was haunting the Northwests in the first place. Turns out that 150 years ago, he and the other lumberfolk were hired to build the Northwest Mansion and told that every year, there would be a great feast for everyone in the town. Only when the mansion was finally finished, the poor were denied entry. As the lumberjack died from an axe-ident, he cursed the Northwest family; if, 150 years later, the Northwest still denied the common folk access to the mansion, he would come back to take his revenge. Nathaniel Northwest wrote this curse down, meaning the current Northwests knew of it as well.
Dipper quickly returns to confront them about this. Pacifica actually reacts very enthusiastically to his return, happy to see him again, until he calls her out as well. She immediately does a 180, trying to apologize and saying she should've told him about the curse, but her parents made her keep quiet about it - but before she can defend herself more, her father once again rings that bell to shut her up. Dipper leaves again and Pacifica runs off to hide, feeling very ashamed of herself. And then things get even worse when Dipper accidentally sets the ghost free. Yeah, well done there, Dipper. The ghost quickly goes to get his revenge by turning everyone in the mansion into wood. And animating all the taxidermy animals. Yikes. Thankfully, there's still a way to stop all of it; a Northwest has to pull the lever to open the mansion gates, finally letting regular people in. Dipper realizes the obvious solution. Get Pacifica to do it.
He finds her hiding in a secret room they'd ended up in while fleeing from the ghost earlier. She's not very responsive, coming to terms with the fact that her whole family's been lying and cheating to get what they want for generations now - and she believes herself to be no different. Dipper does manage to get through to her, making her understand that just because her parents are terrible, that doesn't mean she has to be just like them. It's quite a touching moment... Except, uh, aren't we forgetting something? Oh, right, yeah. The ghost is still on a rampage. Hell, by this point, he's turned nearly everyone in the mansion into wood. Dipper tries once more to stop him, but fails and is transformed as well. Now it's all up to Pacifica.
And she steps up, alright. She calls out to the ghost, telling him that if he really wants her to open the gate, she'll do it. Even with the situation they're now in, though, her parents try to stop her. And once again, her father tries to use the bell to get her to obey him. But this time, Pacifica resists - it's clearly difficult for her, but she refuses to listen to her parents and pulls the lever. The whole town gets to enter the mansion and the ghost is finally at peace. Everything is set right and Pacifica is rightly proud of what she did... though she admits that it probably doesn't change things. Still, Dipper manages to cheer her up again with some good old not-quite-teenage rebellion. Suffice to say, Pacifica is definitely on good terms with the Pine twins after this.
Abilities/Special Powers: Pacifica is a totally regular twelve year old girl. Back home she's got her wealth going for her, but without that... yeah, no special powers, really. She is very skilled in mini-golf, though... and knows how to kick ass with a golf club as well.
Third-Person Sample: The first thing Pacifica notices, after brushing her hair out of her face, is that there are grass stains on her dress. It shouldn't be her first priority, but she can't keep herself from letting out a disgusted "Ugh!" as she dusts herself off.
She's nervous about suddenly being someplace else, but it's Gravity Falls. Weird stuff happens. This is probably just more of that... right? Yeah, totally. So okay, time to figure out exactly where she is. The edge of a forest... Well, not like that helps her much, it's not like she ever explores the forest. Pacifica Northwest is many things, but an adventurer is definitely not one of them. She's so not dressed for it, for one.
Which is why she's not just going to wander around like an idiot. She pulls out her phone, opens up her GPS and...
"What the heck?" Nothing. Oh, that's just great. What good is having the newest model if it can't even help in a situation like this? "Stupid piece of junk."
Whatever. It sucks, but she'll walk if she has to. She's quietly grateful that she's not wearing heels today.
Except the further she goes, the more worried she gets. She doesn't recognize anything. Yeah, it's not like she could give you a tour of the Gravity Falls woods or anything, but she's at the edge and still nothing looks right. And the weather is totally different too. This is too weird.
Her heart sinks when she sees something that definitely shouldn't be here and she realizes that she really has no idea where she is. It can't be Gravity Falls.
Gravity Falls doesn't have a hedge maze.
"Oh, I'm so not in Oregon anymore, am I?"
Almost instinctively, she reaches for her phone again, but she stops herself. Who could she even call? Her parents? Right, because they totally know how to deal with whatever weird magic stuff sent her here. No, she knows who could deal with this. Dipper and Mabel could. They're way better at this. But she doesn't have their number. Of course.
Looks like she's on her own...
First-Person Sample: Ugh, there we go. It's about time I managed to connect to something!
[Pacifica's narrows her eyes while she stares at the screen. Calling her expression icy almost seems too mild. She's not having a good day, sorry.]
Okay, someone better tell me who's to blame for all of this and fast. Because either they send me home right now or I'm suing! I'll sue everyone here if I have to. Don't think I won't!
I have a curfew, okay, I don't have time for this!
[She brushes some hair out of her face and crosses her arms. Now that she's got some of that out of her system, she dials down her anger a little.]
Seriously, I just want to go home already.
